Thai Chilli Peppers

Thai Chilli Peppers

Thai chilli pepper refers to a number of chilli pepper cultivars found commonly in Thailand, and also in neighbouring countries such as Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines and Singapore. Thai chilli peppers are also found in India, mainly Kerala, and are used in traditional dishes of Kerala cuisine.

The hottest form of Thai chilli is the 'birds eye', also known as 'chilli padi'. Its name is due to the small size of the chilli that reminds people about the small size of rice grains, the staple food in the region. It is also known as 'phrik khii nuu' quite literally translated as "mouse shit chilli". These tiny little fiery chillies point downward from the plant and their colours change from green to red. Although small in size, the Thai Chilli pepper is relatively strong at 50,000 to 100,000 on the scoville heat scale.

Another derivative of the Thai chilli is the Thai Ornamental, with peppers that point upward on the plant and go from green to yellow, orange, and then red. Despite their size, these tiny peppers pack a potent punch. A window-box can provide a perfect environment for this particular plant; low maintenance, high yield, diabolically hot peppers that produce for months on a single, tiny plant.
